Heart health: No expiry on the benefits of exercise
It is well known that exercise is good for us and provides countless benefits. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of many serious diseases, improve mental health and mood, and extend lifespan. Getting regular exercise when you have heart disease is especially important. Regular, safe physical activity can strengthen your heart muscle, as well as improve circulation, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
A recent study in over 30 000 patients with heart disease aimed to characterize whether modifications in activity level over time impacted survival. Results found that becoming active later in life can be nearly as beneficial to survival as patients who continued their previous active lifestyles.
These exciting results provide motivation for patients to adopt a healthy lifestyle, no matter the time in their journey, showing it’s never too late to break a bad habit.
