May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month

May 29, 2019

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. The disease also affects the digestive system, reproductive system and sweat glands. It is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults.  Approximately 1 in every 3,600 children born in Canada have CF and 1 in every 25 Canadians are carriers of the disease. At present, there is no cure.

Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s campaign is Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History. On Sunday, May 26th thousands of Canadians united at local community walk sites to celebrate fundraising efforts for Cystic Fibrosis research. As an awareness activity, the MEDUCOM team came together to brainstorm what it means to make Cystic Fibrosis history and what initiatives should be taken to find a cure. It is evident CF is a devasting disease with a severe burden. We believe advocating for new educational and research initiatives as well as bringing awareness to others is critical to finding a cure.
