Artificial Intelligence – How Do You Stay Compliant in a Digital World

Artificial Intelligence is being increasingly used within the medical landscape and we are now seeing 24-hour virtual nurse assistants, robotic surgery and the automation of administrative tasks. Collecting data and information is an integral part of AI’s function which raises very real concerns around protecting privacy from hacker and information breach. How can one be compliant in the world of medicine?

At the annual training session of the Pharmaceutical Advertising Advisory Board (PAAB), we learned about the importance of ensuring digital patient tools are regulated and data banks are appropriately monitored for security. In Canada, we must disclose to PAAB the logic and model assumptions of any preliminary diagnosis conversation and device algorithms. Artificial Intelligence provides opportunities for the use of Chatbots in patient care, but we must first comply with Canadian and PAAB regulations when designing new solutions.
