For one week in mid-February I was lucky enough to escape the cold and grey Canadian winter to experience the distinct warmth of the American South. More specifically, I went to New Orleans, Louisiana, to participate in Mardi Gras celebrations. Other than enjoying the many features distinct to New Orleans (the gumbo and jambalaya, jazz and the architecture of the French quarter), what I found amazing were the Mardi Gras parades. Despite a float limit and a restriction on state funding, it is truly amazing to see how the community comes together not only to create the amazing floats but to fund the parade itself.
I truly had a wonderful time in New Orleans and would recommend this city for anyone interested in taking in some unique architecture and enjoying a great night life scene.
