The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) recently celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the publication of the draft sequence of the human genome. NHGRI vision for the future is centered on a “from base pairs to bedside” approach to research and health management. Many believe there is great promise for genomic information to enhance drug target identification strategies and rational drug design, in addition to patient stratification in clinical trials to improve efficacy and minimize adverse events. In the last ten years we have started to see how genomics can transcend the R&D spectrum in multiple therapeutic areas, bringing “personalized medicine” right to the patient.
