While the scorching summer heat feels great after a long winter, it takes a toll on our body and electric bills. Don’t let the heat bring you down, check out these three tips stay cool this summer:
- Drink lots of water – Keeping hydrated is important during the hot summer months to counteract the loss of water from perspiration. Replacing fluids not only restores hydration, but also assists in decreasing body temperature. TIP: add more fruits and vegetables to your diet to enhance your water intake.
- Block the sun – Just like sunblock helps protect the skin from sun rays, sun blockers can also help protect your home from the sun’s heat. Close your windows and curtains when the sun is out and open them at night when the sun is down to keep the heat out. TIP: use insulated curtains/blinds (ideally with sun-deflecting white on the window side) to block out the heat.
- Stay cool when you sleep – Running the AC all summer can get expensive, so time it right! Program your AC to keep your home cool when you’re home and turn it off when you’re away. Don’t have AC? Fans are a great alternative to optimize sleeping conditions during the summer months. TIP: run your ceiling fan counter-clockwise, or, if you have a window fan, face it out rather than in at night for optimal cooling.
